PayPal LogoPayPal is one of the most convenient ways to pay on the internet. It’s fast, secure, and you don’t need to fish out your wallet to find your card details each time you want to buy something online. But what about when it comes to betting? The good news is that many online betting sites and bookmakers accept PayPal as a payment method for both deposits and withdrawals.

Later on in the article we’ll give you a bit more information about how you can deposit with PayPal, as well as answer some common questions that people often have about it, but first we wanted to get straight into the good stuff: a list of the betting sites that accept PayPal.

How to Use PayPal For Online Betting

For the most part, betting with PayPal is very simple and follows the same process that you would use if you were buying socks online or using it to subscribe to your favourite magazine: you simply select PayPal as the payment method and follow the on screen instructions.

If you’re looking for a more detailed explanation of how it all works, you’ll find it below:

1. Sign Up or Log In to a Betting Site

Ladbrokes Log in or Sign up

The first step is getting into your account. If you already have an account with a betting site that accepts PayPal, then simply log in.

If you don’t currently have an account with a bookmaker that accepts PayPal, or you’re looking to try someone new, then click the Join button and follow the instructions.

Tip: There are lots of excellent betting sites out there, many of which offer welcome bonuses when you sign up. Check our list at the top of the page to see who accepts PayPal, and what goodies they have to offer.

2. Start Your Deposit

Betting Site Deposit Button

Most betting sites have a simple “Deposit” button you can click from any page, as shown in the first example, although some sites may require you to go into your account first before the deposit link is visible.

The bookmakers want you to fund your account, so the deposit button is rarely hard to find.

3. Select PayPal as the Deposit Method

Betting Site PayPal Deposit Option

If your betting site accepts PayPal, then it should be listed as an option within the available payment methods. If it isn’t listed, then it either isn’t accepted, or it isn’t available in your region.

You will often see handy information listed alongside the method, such as the minimum deposit that you’re allowed to make (in our example above, that’s £10).

4. Choose Your Deposit Amount

PayPal Deposit Amount

The next step is to choose your deposit amount. This may be a simple number field where you can enter the amount you’re planning on depositing, or there may also be quick deposit buttons for common amounts (eg: £10, £20, £50 etc..).

You may also have the option of choosing your currency, although often this is linked to your account set up and cannot be changed.

Once you’ve filled in the required fields, simply click “Deposit”.

5. Log In to PayPal

PayPal Log In Screen

The next part of the transaction happens on the PayPal website, normally as a pop up window that is summoned when you click the “Deposit” button from the last step.

At this stage, you’re communicating directly with PayPal and not the betting site – you can verify this by checking the URL in the address bar which should start with: https://www.paypal.com/

If you already have a PayPal account then you can simply log in and proceed with the transaction. If you don’t have a PayPal account you also have the option to create a new one, although in this scenario we would suggest setting the account up first before starting the deposit process.

6. Choose Your Source of Funds

PayPal Source of Funds

Once connected to your PayPal account, you have the option of where you want the money to come from – PayPal acts like a digital wallet, so it’s possible to hold funds within the PayPal account itself. If you don’t have a balance in your PayPal account, or you would prefer to draw directly from your bank, you can select the linked account that you want to use.

After you’ve selected where you would like the deposit to come from, simply click “Complete Purchase”.

7. Return to the Betting Site

PayPal Pending Transaction

Once you have approved the transaction you will be taken back to the betting site for the whole process to complete. Normally this only takes a few seconds, although it can take up to a minute.

It’s important to let the process complete on it’s own and don’t be tempted to refresh the page or click away until the transaction is confirmed, otherwise there may be delays in crediting the funds to your account.

8. Payment Successful

PayPal Deposit Successful

The last thing you’ll see is a confirmation message telling you that the deposit has been successful, normally along with note to tell you what your current balance is.

And that’s it, you’re done! The whole process takes less than a couple of minutes.

Common Questions

Whilst the general premise is very simple, there are a few quirks that apply specifically to using PayPal for betting purposes:

Does the Betting Site Appear On My Bank Statement?

Yes. If you’re using a bank account or debit card as the source of funds for the payment rather than a balance in your PayPal account, then the name of the betting site may appear on your statement. For example:

  • PayPal Payment (Ladbrokes International)

There is a workaround if you don’t want the names of bookmakers showing up on your bank statement* which is to first make a deposit into your PayPal account and make the betting deposit your PayPal balance as the source of funds. Thanks to the Faster Payment System (FPS), transfers from a UK bank account into PayPal are almost instant, so it shouldn’t delay things too much.

*Note – we’re including this information for those of you who don’t want gambling related transactions listed on your bank statement, for example, if you’re applying for a mortgage and concerned that it will affect the application. If you’re hiding transactions because you feel like you’re betting too much, then please seek help.

How Fast are the Transactions?

Depositing is normally instant, meaning it’s just as quick as a debit card. On average we’ve found that completing a deposit from start to finish – that’s clicking the deposit button through to having the funds in your betting account – takes two to three minutes.

When it comes to withdrawals, this will depend on the betting site that you’re using. The transaction part of the withdrawal is normally instant, but most betting sites need time to process the request on their end – this can vary from a few hours to a couple of days.

Can I Claim Bonuses When Using PayPal?

Sadly this is where things have changed in recent years. Historically, when brands started clamping down on the use of eWallets for claiming bonuses, PayPal wasn’t included in the embargo, meaning that you could use PayPal to claim welcome bonuses from a good number of sites. Recently this has changed though, and now many sites, particularly UK bookmakers, have limited their sign up offers to Debit Cards only.

In many cases this restriction only applies to the welcome bonus though, and generally speaking at most decent bookies you’ll find that existing customer offers such as free bet clubs, money back promotions and bet boosts are all compatible with PayPal deposits. This does vary by site and offer though, so check the terms before depositing.

Despite this new lack of welcome bonus eligibility with PayPal, you may notice that we still include the bonus in our list of recommended sites at the top of the page. For many of these offers, you can’t claim them when using PayPal, however we’ve decided to include them in case you want to claim the sign up offer using a Debit Card first, before reverting to PayPal as your regular payment method of choice.
